Obituary
Margaret Jeanette (Lund) Halbakken was born on June 2, 1917, in Blue Earth, MN, to Mabel (Nelson) and John K. Lund

They moved to Story City, IA. After her mother got sick, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Ole and Bertina Olson, in Chicago.

She attended North Park College in Chicago and was a parish worker at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Chicago. She also attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Luther College in Decorah, IA.

She married Earl Edward Ellingsen on October 23, 1943. He was killed in the army in Belgium on December 17, 1944.

In 1948, she graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, with a degree in sociology.

On August 21, 1948, she married David Sanstad Halbakken in Pelican Rapids, MN.

They spent two years working with war refugees through the Lutheran World Federation in the Munich area of Germany.

She was a faithful pastor's wife as he served parishes near Flandreau, SD, Volga, SD, taught at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, and served parishes in Fertile, MN, Waterloo, IA, and Cottonwood, MN. After retirement, they moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID, in 1982 and then to Williston, ND, in 1994. After David's death in 2004, she moved to New Richland, Minnesota.

She had a gift of hospitality and enjoyed entertaining people. She had a heart to help people that were in need and had a burden for global mission. She taught Bible study classes her whole life. Her specialty was teaching on prayer and on the Gospel of Luke. She was also a Bethel Bible Study teacher.

She helped out with many church and community functions.

She enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, gardening, cooking, baking, singing, skiing, foreign languages, and photography. Highlights included traveling to Israel, Norway, and Germany.

Margaret and David had three children, David E. Halbakken, Mari Halbakken, and Arne Halbakken.

Margaret died on September 6, 2005, in New Richland, MN. She at attained the age of 88 years, 3 months, and 4 days.

She is survived by her son David (and Judy) Halbakken of Bellingham, WA, son-in-law John (and Lydia) Broschat of Williston, ND, and son Arne (and Debbie) Halbakken of Ellendale, MN. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kolya (Nick) Halbakken, Rebecca Broschat, Benjamin Broschat, David W. Halbakken, Briana Broschat, Heidi Halbakken, Rajesh Broschat, and Laura Halbakken.

She was preceded in death by daughter Mari Broschat in 1999, her husband David, her sisters, Ruth (and Glen) Erickson, Mabel (and Clarence) Tucker, Olive (and Julian) Lovlyn, and her brothers Bob (and Marion) Lund and John Kenneth Lund.
