James Helling, age 88, formerly of Mason City, IA, died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at his home in Story City, IA.

James Richard Helling was born on June 5, 1924 in Kensett, Iowa. He was born the son of Ole and Leona (Tabbert) Helling.

He received his education by attending grade school in Kensett, high school in Rock Falls, and graduated from Hamilton Business College.

Jim proudly served his country in the Merchant Marines during the years 1943 – 1946 and in the U.S. Army, 1949 – 1950. He participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2010.

On May 22, 1954 he was united in marriage to Marlene Joyce Houck in the St. John’s United Methodist Church, Radcliffe, Iowa. They resided in Mason City for 54 years prior to moving to Story City in 2008.

Jim was employed by Alliant Energy (Interstate Power) for over 39 years and retired in 1989.
His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. He was a world-wide traveler, loved camping, card club, shopping, garage sales, golf, watching all sports and cheering for his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings.

He was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City and currently was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. In past years Jim had been active in the Mason City Masonic Lodge, Moose Lodge and Wigwam-n-Wagon camp club.

Jim passed away peacefully at his home in Story City on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene “Mar” Helling of Story City; daughter Rosalind (Steven) Gordon of Austin, Texas; son Scott (Gloria) Helling of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren Shawn (Heather) Hedrick, Erinn (Chad) Smith, Erik (Kristin) Helling, Kelsey (Robert) Andrade; Ashlee (Tyler) Braland; great-grandchildren Rhett and Grayson Hedrick, Madelyn and Reed Smith; brother Roger (Fran) May and sister Janet (Larry) Klink.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Phyllis Helling; step-father Wilbur May, and his in-laws Rose and Ernest Houck.
