HACTOR HILL CAME TO AMERICA IN 1883

Hactor Hill was born in Olen, near Haugesund, Norway, Nov. 29, 1858, an ddied at his home in Story City, Iowa, March 27, 1933, being 74 years and six months old.

In 1883 he came to America, making his home for short time at his uncle's folks, Bor Enge, at Roland, Iowa. Not long after his arrival tothis country he started work at Mr. Thompson's cooper shop in Ames. This was moved to Story City in 1887.

When Mr. Thompson in 1891 sold his business, Mr. Hill became a part owner of the cooper shop. Later on the cooperage business came into the hands of the Hill family and the business has been built up to become one of the main manufacturing plants in Story City. Mr. Hill spent 42 years in this enterprise and thus in his humble way has been instrumental in building up the town to what it is today.

Mr. Hill was a true citizen of Story City and he wished to see the town succeed, but he also was a true Christian in word and deed and as such he saw things in his town of which he did not approve.

During these many years stay at Story City, he was a faithful member of the Bethel Lutheran church. His motto was: "Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honor dwelleth." Ps. 26:8.

Sept. 5th, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Heggen. To this union were born 12 children, of which one died in infancy. Those who survive are: Bert, John, Sanford and Torkel of Story City; Mrs. Martha Olson of Northwood; Mrs. Carrie Endreland and Edwin Hill of Thompson; Marie Hill of Savaanna, Ill.; Mrs. Jennie Coulter of Washington, D. C.; Selma Hill of Cedar Falls; and Judith Hill of Finchford. These children, with their mother, mourn the departure of dear father and husband. He also leaves 15 grandchildren; two brothers, Jacob and Knute Hil of Roland, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Olson of Marshalltown.
