Darrell William Harmon

BORN: October 12, 1933
DIED: December 7, 2012
LOCATION: Slater, Iowa

Darrell William Harmon, 79 years old, passed away December 7, 2012 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. He was born October 12, 1933 at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, to William and Irma Harmon, of Slater. He grew up in Slater and graduated from Slater High School in 1951. He married Myrna Gibson on January 19, 1958 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. To this union were born two children, Charles (Chip) and Krista.

He served in Korea for the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Darrell was a 50 year member of the Slater American Legion, and was the legion commander for several years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #5060 in Madrid. Darrell worked at Firestone in Des Moines and retired after 37 years. After retirement, he worked for the City of Slater for 10 years.

Darrell enjoyed a lifelong love of hunting, fishing, gardening and being in the outdoors. One of his favorite places was the family farm in southern Iowa where he spent many years helping his father-in-law, "Woody", farm. Many more years were spent at the farm mushroom hunting, fishing, just driving around and spending time with family.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Myrna; son, Charles (Sheila) Harmon of Kelley; daughter, Krista (Patrick) Sheehan of Madrid; three grandchildren, Brandon (Dawnae) Sheehan of Madrid, Danielle (Craig) Harmon-Kuhrt of Kyle, Texas, and Jill Sheehan of Madrid; three great-grandchildren, Kendall and Kael Kuhrt, and Emersyn Sheehan; sister, Janice (John) Walker; brother, Richard (Cheryle) Harmon; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Ron Harmon; his daughter-in-law Roxanne Harmon; and his grandson Derek Harmon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 10th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater with interment in the Slater Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 9th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Services have been entrusted to Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater.
