Wilbur Kooyman, 91, of Huxley, formerly of Cambridge, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Wilbur was born December 24, 1920 near Prairie City, Iowa. He was the son of Martin and Cornelia (Verwers) Kooyman. He graduated from Bondurant High School in 1939. Wilbur was united in marriage to Pearl Thomas on January 8, 1949. Wilbur was manager of the Alleman Coop in Cambridge for 35 years prior to his retirement. Wilbur received Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age. He was a life-long member of the Bondurant Federated Church. He counted it a great privilege to teach the adult Sunday school class there for over 50 years.

Wilbur was a World War II veteran. He served in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific Theatre as a technical sergeant, and was assigned to the 2nd Combat Cargo Group as a crew chief on a C-46. He was a member of the American Legion Post 233 of Cambridge, served as commander of the Legion, and was a member of the war memorial committee. This committee built the Cambridge war memorial and painted the impressive mural in honor of the military veterans who have served to protect our nation and freedom.

Wilbur served on the Cambridge city council for 15 years. He founded the House of Knowledge Coffee Club and served on the Cambridge Senior Housing Board of Directors. Wilbur enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, making deliveries for "Meals on Wheels" and helping the elderly. He greatly enjoyed attending the World War II 8th Combat Cargo Squadron reunions.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Pearl, of Huxley, Iowa; two sons: Dennis (Peggy) Kooyman of Humboldt, Iowa, and Ron Kooyman of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters: Lois (Lawrence) Bartel of Liberty, Missouri, and Marsha (Bruce) Anderson of Arlington, Texas; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother: Dale Kooyman of Sacramento, California; and one sister: Ruth Highland of Monroe, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Simon and Robert; and two sisters Margaret Cornelison and Edna Kooyman.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Saturday at Faith Baptist Church in Cambridge, Iowa, with Rev. Tom Lee and Rev. Jacob Saylor officiating. Interment will be in the Cambridge Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Cambridge American Legion.

Visitation will be 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Friday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell.

Memorials may be made to the Cambridge American Legion Wall Mural Fund.
