Naomi Alberta Rullestad

BORN: May 2, 1914
DIED: November 4, 2012
LOCATION: Story City, Iowa

Naomi Alberta Rullestad, 98, Story City, IA died peacefully, after a short illness, surrounded by family on November 4, 2012 at the Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames. Naomi, daughter of Otto and Louise Knudson, was born May 2, 1914. She was raised in the rural Ellsworth area. After high school, she attended Iowa Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and later taught in country schools.
She married Ernest Rullestad in 1936 and together worked and raised a family on a farm near Jewell for 49 years. Ernest died in 1967. Naomi was well-known for her sweet personality, generous giving of her produce from her huge garden, hospitality and love for her family. Her grandchildren brought her great joy. After becoming a widow, she worked at the Story City Hospital and later the Viking Inn in Story City. She did not retire until 80.

A resident of Story City since 1985, Naomi lived the last 2 years at Bethany Manor. Naomi was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.
Those thankful for having shared in Naomi's life are her children Lois Prosser of Cedar Rapids, Shirley (Kay) Hill of Springville; Ken (Sandy Bell) Rullestad of Jewell and Cathy (Lee) DeJong of Fort Dodge; grandchildren Kim (Marc) Frette, Kelly (Kent) Allison, Kris (Cathy) Hill, Michele (Matt) Anderson, Kristen (Travis) Kasner, Jennifer (Greg) McSweeny, Todd (Ashley) Rullestad and Jonathan (Andrea) DeJong. Naomi is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Beverly, sister Gladys Sydness infant brother, infant sister and great-granddaughters Elsie and Valerie. Also preceding her in death were several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Life Chaplaincy for the Today Fund.
