Thomas Richard Howe
February 7, 1936 - September 12, 2012Thomas Richard Howe, 76, formerly of Ames, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was born on February 7, 1936 in Ames, the son of George and Elizabeth (Wall) Howe. He attended St. Cecilia School and Ames High School and was a member of both schools' basketball teams. Tom's high school years were shortened by the onset of schizophrenia, which he battled for the remainder of his life.
Tom is survived by his two sisters, Mary Lynne Howe of Rochester Hills, MI and Martha (Kenneth) Stofflet of Milton, WI; a brother, John (Linda) Howe of Madison, WI; twelve nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Throughout the years that Tom dealt with mental illness, he was a generous, loving, and gentle man. His family will be forever grateful to the Story County Community Life Program in Ames, and Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter, for their kindness in treating Tom as a part of their family.
A graveside service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Boone, IA on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 2:30 pm. On-line condolences may be left at www.stevensmemorialchapel.com. Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
