Thora Margaret Brekken Kinseth
BORN: November 18, 1913
DIED: September 6, 2012
LOCATION: Story City, IowaThora Margaret Brekken Kinseth, 98, of Story City, Iowa, passed away on September 6, 2012 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall, Iowa.
Thora was born November 18, 1913 in Clear Lake, South Dakota to John and Selma Christine (Dyvig) Brekken. She attended Randall High School and St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN where she graduated with a degree in English. On June 18, 1941 she married Carroll B. Kinseth at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall, Iowa.
For four years, Thora taught English in Audubon, IA and was a high school principal in Bradgate. She also did graduate work at Iowa State University in Ames and received her Principal's Certificate. During Carroll's service in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater, she taught in Dayton, IA and also Arizona. After living in Orinda, CA, and Oakmont, PA, they moved to Ames, IA in 1963. Thora served on various boards & organizations, some of which included Chapter AA, P.E.O., the Board of Beloit Children's Home, and Bethesda Lutheran Church. Thora and Carroll moved to Story City in 1978 where she became involved in many community endeavors. Thora was an active member of the Story City Historical Society serving as its first president and board member for several years. She was a board member of the Randall Story State Bank (now Reliance State Bank); a member of the Bertha Bartlett Library fund-raising committee; a Roland-Story School Foundation Founding Committee board member; served on the Carousel Restoration Committee; a member of Praeri Rail Trail Questers; a member of Chapter FX, P.E.O.; was an original stockholder of the Comfort Inn; helped raise funds for the Fairview Lodge project; a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church; a long-time supporter of Riverside Bible Camp and the recipient of the local Lions Club Lifetime of Service Award.
She is survived by her two daughters: Kay Ehlers & husband, Don, of Omaha, Nebraska; Julie Zaring & husband, Tim, of Cincinnati, Ohio and two foster daughters, JoAnn Smith & husband, Ron; and Judy McCall & husband, Homer; 5 grandchildren; Angie Gathye & husband, Butch of Gretna, NE, Brett Ehlers & wife, Kristin of Wheaton, IL, Lockwood Zaring & wife, Lisa of Cincinnati, Martha Jane Zaring of Washington D.C., Blake Zaring of Cincinnati, great grandsons, Cole & Clay Gathye of Gretna and great granddaughter, Addison (Addie) Zaring of Cincinnati. She is also survived by her twin brothers, Burdette Brekken & wife Barbara of San Marino, CA and Burdell Brekken, of Fountain Hills, AZ, as well as numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.
Thora was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll of 61 years, parents, one brother: Judean Brekken of Story City, two sisters, Ethel Husmoe of Wausau, WI, and Baby Brekken, four sister-in-laws, Lynn Brekken of San Marino, CA, Leone Brekken of Story City, June Brekken of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Lorraine Schuffer of CA ; and two brother-in-laws, Art Husmoe of Wausau, WI & Curtis Kinseth of Fallon, NV.
Memorials may be given in Thora's memory to the Story City Historical Society or the Bethany Life "Chaplaincy for Today" fund.
