Frances Whaley, age 102, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2001 at the Bethany Manor Chapel with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell, Iowa. Becker Funeral and Cremation Service of Jewell is caring for Frances and her family.

Frances Marie Ness was born October 27, 1908 in Norway, Iowa, to Gust and Sena (Olson) Ness. She moved to Story City with her family and graduated from Story City High School in 1920. On October 21, 1932 Frances married Herbert Cyril Whaley in Clarion. Frances was a homemaker and enjoyed playing the piano. They lived in Story City where Herbert worked with his father-in-law at the Whaley Implement Co. in the 1930's. They lived in Minnesota and then the Kamrar area for a time, moving to Jewell in 1958. In retirement they moved to Story City in 1996. Herbert died the next year. Frances lived at Cedar Place and moved to Timberland Village when it opened. She has resided at Bethany Manor since 2004.

Frances is survived by a son, Roger Lee (Donna) Whaley of Rolette, North Dakota (summers) and Gila Bend, Arizona (winters); a daughter, Verree Joanne Goodman of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren, Wesley Steven Small and Merilee Frances Small. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; two brothers, Milo and Orlin Ness; and a sister, Esther Mitts.
