Opal June Hocker
BORN: September 6, 1929
DIED: August 6, 2012
LOCATION: Rochester, MinnesotaOpal June Hocker was born on September 6, 1929 to Elwin Orion and O'Lillian Cathine Erickson on their farm near Radcliffe, in Hamilton County, Iowa.
Opal attended country school and graduated from high school in Jewell, Iowa in 1947. Opal attended Waldorf College and graduated in 1949 with a teaching degree. Opal dearly loved teaching and her students. She taught 1st and 2nd grade in communities in Iowa and in Minneapolis, Minnesota for close to 10 years.
Opal married John Colley Hocker on August 10, 1957 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Iowa. After their children arrived, Opal was a homemaker.
Opal enjoyed traveling, bridge, reading, oil painting, Scrabble and all word games (she almost always won!), church activities, and her family.
Opal passed away peacefully on August 6, 2012 after being a resident at Season's Hospice House in Rochester, Minnesota for almost one year.
Opal is survived by her daughters, Kay Ann Hocker (Jon Veer) of Rochester and Karla Lyn Hocker of Boone, Iowa; two granddaughters, Kendra Kay Malone of Des Moines, Iowa and Samantha Anne Malone (Scott Lebo) of Ankeny, Iowa; two great-grandsons, Anthony John Scott Lebo and Ayden Wesley Scott Lebo, of Ankeny.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers Arling Erickson and Robert Erickson; and infant twin Elwin Orion Erickson, Jr.
Memorials will go to Ronald McDonald House.
