Naomi Evelyn Smith
July 2, 1929 - August 7, 2012

Naomi Evelyn Smith, 83 of Nevada died on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Bethany Life Communities in Story City. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11 in the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th Street in Nevada. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Naomi was born on July 2, 1929 in Mills County to Thomas and Nellie (Shaffar) Smith. She was a 1947 graduate of Taber High School and a 1950 graduate of Northwest Missouri State College. On December 19, 1953, Naomi married Richard "Dick" D. Smith in the Malvern Methodist Church. She taught school in Malvern for 4 years and retired from the Nevada Community School district after teaching for 25 years. Naomi was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada, Delta Kappa Gamma, the National, State, and Nevada Educational Association. She received the Iowa Conservation Teacher of the Year award. Naomi enjoyed being with children, reading, and traveling. She also served on the Nevada Public Library Board.

Naomi is survived by her husband, Dick Smith of Nevada; two daughters, Debra Smith of Nashville, TN and Becky (Dave) Lekwa of Nevada; two grandchildren Daniel and Christopher Lekwa; four brothers, Jerry (Ellen) Smith and Lewis (Eileen) Smith, all of Sidney, IA, Vern Smith of Colorado Springs, and Dwight (Madonna) Smith of Tabor; two sisters, Norma (Carl) Leffingwell of Tabor and Clara (Larry) Nebelsick of Nebraska City, NE; numerous nieces and nephews.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Faye and Fern Smith.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 10 with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in loving memory of Naomi for the First United Methodist Church or the Nevada Public Library.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Naomi and her family.
