October 28, 1915 - March 16, 2012
Collins, IowaGeneva "Jean" Harmon, 96, of the Collins-Maxwell area passed away on Friday,
March 16, 2012.Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 22, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell, Iowa. Interment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on March 22, 2012.
Jean, a twin, was born in Nevada, Iowa, on October 28, 1915, the daughter of Gilbert and Clara (Corbin) Pierce. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1933. On May 7, 1935, Jean married James "Jim" Harmon. Jean was a farmer's wife and helped Jim with most tasks on the farm including the livestock, harvest, and making sure the fields were free of weeds.
The couple managed a restaurant in Shannon City when they were first married. Jean also worked at Donnelly's in Nevada, Iowa. Each year Jean would can and freeze the produce from her large garden.
Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, visiting and playing card games and Scrabble. She also enjoyed quilting, mushroom hunting, and reading, including reading the entire Holy Bible. Jean and Jim were world travelers. Their trips took them to most of the 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the Holy Land, Egypt, China, and many European countries.
During the last four years, Jean has been a resident of the Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny. Those left to cherish Jean's memory are her sons: Jerry (Joyce) Harmon of Maxwell and Richard (Dick) Harmon of Mingo and his friend Linda German from Adel, daughters: Linda (Harold) Laughlin of Columbia, Missouri and Patty (Jim) Titus of Eldora, 10 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter.
Jean was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two brothers, three sisters, and one grandson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mill Pond Retirement Community, Iowa Health Taylor House, and the First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell, Iowa.
