Obituary

Gerald Russell Pepper, 85, longtime Ames resident, died at his home on Saturday, April 16, 2011. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
Gerald Pepper was born August 27, 1925 in Ames to Carl and Goldie (Manges) Pepper. He was married to Bonnie (Doerr) Pepper for nearly 63 years.

He served with the 86th Infantry Division (Blackhawk) during WW II, in both the European and Pacific theaters. He resided in Oskaloosa from 1950 to 1955, and Spirit Lake from 1957 to 1961, after which he and his family moved to Ames. He was the Executive Director of Iowa Institute of Co-operatives. In retirement, he spent several years traveling with his wife, Bonnie, as a volunteer with VOCA (Volunteers Overseas Co-operative Assistance), advising co-operatives in rural Ivory Coast, Poland, Bulgaria, Bolivia, and Jamaica.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Pepper of Ames; two sisters, Annabel Kalina, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Beverly (Gary) Bloomquist, of Des Moines; seven children: Steve (Deborah) Pepper, of Amsterdam The Netherlands; Bill (Kathy) Pepper, of Pueblo, CO; Jim (Jane) Pepper of Monument, CO; Gail Pepper of Ames; Pennie (Dan) Earsa, of Pocahontas, AR; Dave (Denise) Pepper, of Inverness, IL; and Andy (Amber) Pepper of Marion, IA. He is also survived by thirty-three grand, great, and great-great grandchildren.
