ObituaryMartha Louise (Smith) Self, 87, of Ames, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 30 at Northcrest Healthcare Center in Ames, Iowa. There will be a "Celebration of Life" gathering at Northcrest on Friday, September 2 from 2 - 4 pm. Funeral services will be held at Rutledge Funeral Home in Hico, Texas at 11 am on Tuesday, September 6 with burial to follow at Clairette Cemetery, Clairette, TX.
Martha was born August 23, 1924 in Stephenville, Texas to W.C. and Susie (Hinson) Smith. On October 16, 1943, she married H.L. Self in Stephenville. H.L. and Martha lived in various locations in Texas while H.L. pursued his doctorate degree in Animal Science. From 1952 until 1959 they made their home in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1959 they relocated to Ames, where Dr. Self was on the staff of the Animal Science Department at Iowa State University. He retired in 1985 and the couple moved to Clairette, where they resided until H.L.'s death in December 2002. Martha returned to Ames in 2003 and was a resident of the Northcrest Retirement Community until her death.
Martha was a homemaker, but had also worked part-time at the Merle Norman Cosmetic Store in Ames in the 1970's. She and H.L. were longtime members of the Ames Golf & Country Club and she was active in her bridge club throughout her life. Religion was a very important part of her life. She had been a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames and had attended the Evangelical Free Church in Ames for the past several years.
Martha is survived by a daughter, Linda (Jerry) Lindell, of Alvarado, TX; a son, Michael (Barbara) Self, of McDonough, GA; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, and one brother, W.C. (Martha) Smith of Stephenville, TX.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Debra Parker and Ann Peterson, and a brother, Tullus Smith.
