Obituary

William (Bill) Houk Jr., 76, of Ames, surrounded by his loving family at home, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 1, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Lifepointe Church. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Bill was born April 17, 1935 in Ames to William and Sadie (Simonson) Houk Sr. He graduated from Ames High School in 1953 and attended ISU on a football scholarship from 1953 to 1954, and was selected the 1954 Veishea Athlete of the Year. Bill received the AHS Football Distinguished Alumnus Award for excellence in football and life in 1994 and was inducted into the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame for football in 1996.

He married Barbara Warren July 24, 1955. Together they raised two children, Dan and Kerry. He loved his family, especially spending time with his grandsons and attending their sporting events. He loved to travel, his favorite places being Hawaii and Branson. He also loved to play golf, especially with his family. Bill was an avid fisherman and loved taking fishing trips to Canada with family and friends

Bill had several career interests, beginning with charter pilot and flight instruction at Howard's Flying Service (Ames Municipal Airport), where he also was a flight instructor for the ISU ROTC program. He continued his love of flying for J.D. Armstrong Co. and Erickson Machinery of Story City as their company pilot.

He then joined Hunziker and Furman Realty in 1968 and enjoyed 25 years of real estate sales. In 1982 he joined Iowa Benefits, Inc as a health insurance administrator. From 1990 until in 2000, Bill was a financial advisor.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara; son, Dan (Jane) Houk and their sons, Jeff and Eric; daughter, Kerry Houk, all of Ames; Terry (Peg) Warren of Ames and their sons, Billy and Aaron, of Des Moines; sister, Pauline Pallas of Minneapolis, MN; sister-in-law, Pat Morrison, of Ames; many nieces and nephews and many beloved friends.

His parents preceded him in death.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the William Houk Memorial Fund at US Bank, 2615 Grand Ave., Ames, IA 50010, designated for Homeward Hospice or Lifepointe Church.
