Obituary

Bettie Lee Songer was born on February 18, 1925 in Leesburg, VA and died at Bethany Manor, Story City, IA on December 3, 2011. Bettie attended school in Leesburg, where she was an exceptional student and a basketball star. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator and then attended what is now Eastern Nazarene University. She met her husband-to-be, Joseph R. (Joe) Songer of Charleston, WV, and they were married on September 4, 1948. They remained happily married for 63 years, raising six children. She graduated with a degree in biology and moved in 1951 to Greenbelt, MD, where Joe began a career working for the US Department of Agriculture. In 1959, she followed him to Ames, IA. After Joe's retirement from the National Animal Disease Center, Joe and Bettie traveled worldwide on Work and Witness tours, building schools and clinics in Africa and South America. Bettie lived for her children and grandchildren, and is survived by sons Glenn (Pam), Jeff (Kris), and Joel, and daughters Gretchen Partrich (Dan), Jenifer Bungert, and Heidi Eichorn (Jeff). In addition, she leaves behind 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She served as a sort of surrogate mother for many children, for whom she provided childcare over a period of decades. She was preceded in death by Joe, who passed just six weeks ago. Bettie is remembered well for her continual service to others, including those in rest homes, hospitals, and other forms of medical care. She suffered from dementia over the last years of her life, and is now at peace. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2011, at the Ames Church of the Nazarene, South 2nd and Kellogg, Ames. The family suggests contributions to Doctors Without Borders in lieu of flowers.Arrangements under the direction of Stevens Memorial Chapel, Ames, IA.
