Joyce was born on September 30, 1933 in Marshalltown, the daughter of Archie and Hazel (Waltemeyer) DeButts and grew up on a farm outside Melbourne, IA. Joyce taught preschool at Ames Community Preschool Center for nearly 20 years and later worked in the cafeteria at Marshalltown Medical Center until her retirement in 2010. Joyce was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed bird watching, gardening, cooking and baking. Joyce's grandchildren and great grandchildren were the love of her life.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Toni Robinson and her sister, Barb Barnes. She is survived by her sons, Todd (Ann) Martin of Story City and Tom (Kathy) Martin of Wisconsin; son-in-law, Mike Robinson of Huxley; grandsons, Matthew (Bobbi) Robinson of Ames, Kyle Martin and Kurt Martin, both of Story City; granddaughters, Jennifer (Luke) Bland and their children Carter and Cade of Ankeny, Eleece (Dave Pink) Martin of St. Paul, MN, Sara Robinson of Ames and Courtney Martin of Story City; a brother, Robert (L'louise) DeButts of Medina, WA and a very dear friend, Val Goodman of Marshalltown.
