James D. Peterson

LOCATION: Story City, IowaJames D. Peterson died at his home on October 10, 2010. James was born on August 2, 1925 in Callender, IA to Lucian and Mae Peterson. He grew up in Callender pumping gas and fixing cars at the local gas station. He attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, OK, studying Fire Safety Engineering – and was later employed by National Disease Lab and various farm insurance companies. He married Lois Arlene Mosel on August 28, 1955, later having three sons – Joel, Daniel, and Philip. James served his country during World War II in the South Pacific on a number of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers starting in 1944. He was an aircraft Crew Chief for TPM Torpedo bombers. James was a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and St. Petri Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed travelling in his RV, spending winters in Texas. He collected Maytag gas engines, and loved to tinker with cars, lawn mowers, and anything else mechanical. He also enjoyed polka music, fishing, and talking with old and new friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Thomas and one sister Eleanor. He is survived by his wife, Lois, and his three sons and their wives (Joel and Cindy, Daniel and Olga, and Philip and Brenda). One brother, Lucian Eugene, and one sister, Mary, also survive.
Services are planned at St Petri Lutheran Church in Story City on Thursday, October 14 at 10:30 am. Visitation at the church will be available prior to the service starting at 9:30 am. A light lunch will be provided after the ceremony at the church. A gravesite ceremony at the Peterson family plot in Callender, IA is planned for 1:00 pm that same day with coffee and dessert afterword at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Callender.
