From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Elizabeth Carbrey

DIED: December 15, 2010
LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Elizabeth A. Carbrey, a long time resident of Ames, passed away at Israel Hospice House on December 15, 2010 surrounded by loving family and friends. She was 85. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 23 at 10:00 am at the Unitarian Society in Ames.

Elizabeth was born in February 1925 in Philadelphia, PA to a family of artists. She graduated with honors from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1943. Under her photo in the yearbook was the note, “She lives on music and art.”

She received a full scholarship to the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. She left her studies to marry Edward Carbrey.

Edward and Elizabeth moved to Ames in 1956. Elizabeth’s children include Ellen, Theresa, Anna, Agnes, twins Shawn and Cecelia, born in 1946, 1948, 1950, 1954, 1960, and 1960 respectively. Elizabeth was a full time mother and homemaker, serving as a leader in Camp Fire and encouraging her children’s academic and musical studies.

Elizabeth returned to her art when her youngest was five after winning a local award for a pastel portrait of him. She was active in the early Octagon arts community, studied life drawing, and painted landscapes she loved both in the Midwest and Ontario, Canada. Her work was shown at the Octagon, the Memorial Union, and the Unitarian Universal Fellowship. She created a wonderful collection of work, which reflected her love of nature.

Elizabeth shared many active and challenging hobbies with her husband. They loved classical music and played together in the Central Iowa Symphony. They attended concerts together, especially those of the Ames Town and Gown Association. The outdoors was another great love and they spent free time canoeing, fishing and camping.

Birding became a shared source of pleasure for Elizabeth and Edward. They were very active in local birding groups. Elizabeth reported her most treasured memories were of expeditions to remote regions to observe rare and unusual bird species.

Elizabeth is survived by Theresa Carbrey, of Iowa City; Agnes Carbrey, of Lexington, VA.; Dr. Cecelia (Dr. Stewart) Babbott, of Kansas City, KS.; Anna Carbrey, of Kansas City, KS.; Shawn Carbrey, of Ames, eight grandchildren, and her brother Julius Kreier, of Columbus, OH.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010, and her daughter, Ellen, in 1971, her sister Gertrude Garber and brother George Kreier.
