Gary Severson

January 20, 1941 - December 29, 2010
Slater, Iowa

Gary was born January 20, 1941 to Joel and Flossie (Denton) Severson. He was born in their family home at 206 Marshall in Slater, where he lived until the time of his death. Gary had two older sisters, Maralyn and Katherine. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a member of the last graduating class from Slater High School in 1958. He attended Waldorf College for one year and served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1960 – 1966.

Gary married in 1964 and was the father to Sheila, Joel and Jason. He was an accomplished woodworking craftsman who was employed by Arnold Ihle Construction until 1977. Then he and Ron Harmon started their own business, H & S Construction, where he worked as a finish carpenter until he began working at Iowa State University in 1982. This is where he met Martha Steinbach, whom he married in 1987. He had his first heart attack and bypass surgery Fathers Day weekend in 1988, and he suffered many heart ailments leading to his heart transplant in 1997. Gary retired in 1995. In addition to his woodworking activities, he enjoyed reading, history, hunting, fishing, eagle/bird watching and spending time with his family, his friends and his dog, Sadie.

He is survived by his wife, Martha of Slater; his daughter, Sheila (Kevin) King of Des Moines; sons, Joel (Michelle) of Cedar Rapids and Jason of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and three grandchildren, Caleb, Hanna and Samuel Severson of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Howard Hammond of Slater; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, Maralyn Hammond and Katherine Olson; and brother-in-law, Robert Olson.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Donor Network, Mercy Hospice (Des Moines) and/or the Madrid Home.
