Edwin Ed Welp

BORN: December 3, 1921

DIED: April 9, 2011

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Edwin K. Welp, 89, of Ames, passed away on April, 9, 2011 at the Israel Family Hospice House. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Ed was born near Kamrar, IA on December 3, 1921 to Eppo and Bertha (Mechaelsen) Welp. He grew up on the family farm near Kamrar and graduated from Kamrar High School. On July 14, 1946 he married Jeanette Silvey in Boone, after meeting at a roller skating rink in Boone. They lived in Kamrar, Webster City and Carroll before moving to Ames in 1959.

Ed worked as a carpenter, a farmer, a roller skating rink manager, an insurance salesman, a production supervisor and engineer for 14 years at Bourns, Inc., a production supervisor at Mrs. Clark's Foods and as a realtor for 10 years before retiring in 1986. He loved making and fixing things, problem solving and developing new tools and better ways of doing things. Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames. He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by his brother, Lloyd of Davenport, IA; his sister, Eunice (Jean) Daniell of Branson, MO; son, Stanley Welp and wife Leyi Yan of Ames; and two granddaughters, Chelsea Hardin of Burnsville, MN and Lexsea Stickrod of Wichita, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eppo and Bertha; wife of 57 years, Jeanette; sisters, Helen Welp, Irene Fonken, and Dorthy (Dottie) Donahue; and brothers, Marion and Willis (Bill).

He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. All who knew him, even for a short time, quickly came to the same conclusion, "He is a good man."
