From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Buford S. Johnson

BORN: October 27, 1917

DIED: September 1, 2011

LOCATION: Story City, Iowa

Buford S. Johnson was born October 26, 1917 to Charles and Jennie Johnson in Wayne, Nebraska. He was the youngest of ten children (six brothers and three sisters). Buford lived in Wayne until he married Ethel Gabelman (from Madison, Nebraska) on March 30, 1941. They had one son, Gary Charles, who was born in 1943. The family lived a few years in Spirit Lake, Iowa where Buford managed movie theaters.

After several family vacations to Colorado, Buford, Ethel and brother Clarence purchased a restaurant and gas station in Buena Vista, Colorado in 1947. A gift shop was added to the restaurant and a fishing/tackle shop was added to the gas station. They sold the business in 1973 so Buford and Ethel could travel in their RV and spend time fishing.

Ethel passed away in 1988 from complications of diabetes. That fall Buford took his fifth wheel to Tucson, Arizona to be near long time friends from Buena Vista. While there he became friends with Winifred "Winnie" Strain from Story City. They married on August 7, 1989 and for many years traveled between Arizona, Colorado and Iowa. They remained close until his death.

Buford passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Bethany Manor in Story City at 93 years of age.

Buford is survived by his wife Winnie of Story City; his son Gary (Nancy) Johnson of Denver, Colorado; his granddaughter Tamara (Zach) Sippl and their son Ethan of St. Paul, Minnesota; his grandson Eric Johnson of Seattle, Washington; three step-sons, Larry Goodmanson of Ankeny, Iowa, Jim Goodmanson of Randall, Iowa, and Ron Goodmanson of Roland, Iowa; his stepdaughter Vicki Grandgeorge of Fulda, Minnesota; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ethel; four brothers Al, Clem, Cliff and Bob; and two sisters, Hazel and Alvern.

Burial will be at a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Buena Vista, Colorado.
