BORN: June 26, 1919

DIED: February 11, 2012

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Winifred Hining

Winifred Hining (McCallister), 92, of Ames, passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center on Feb.11, 2012. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday Feb.27 at Adams Funeral Home.

She was born June 26, 1919 in Iowa City to Benjamin and Mary McCallister. Her family farmed in Fairfield, Iowa. After graduation she taught in a one room schoolhouse. During World War II she worked as a gun inspector in a military plant in Minneapolis. She was married to Hollis Hining and moved to Ames in 1945. She worked at Iowa State Student Health Services for 26 years and at the Solar Inn for 24 years where she made lifelong friends. After retiring she lived on a farm near Nevada with her companion, Bob Thompson. They both enjoyed going to farm sales, farm shows and to the truck stop daily for coffee and conversation with their friends. She was able to spend a lot of time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia Alexander of Ames; two brothers, Robert McCallister of Boulevard, CA. and William McCallister of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by three grandsons, Rodney Hibbs of Ames, James Cowan, of Iowa City , and John Alexander of Des Moines; six great grandchildren, Cody, Brandy, Chris, Ryan, Nicholas, and Mikayla; and eight nieces; five nephews; and three great-great grandchildren Rio, Milo, and Atticus.

She was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin McCallister; mother, Mary McCallister Hiller; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hagedorm, and Helen Johnson; and brother, Richard McCallister.

The world has lost an amazingly strong and kind woman. Great Grandma Winnie you will be missed, Brandy.
