BORN: June 12, 1925

DIED: April 3, 2012

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

WILLIS "BILL" JOHNSON

Willis "Bill" Johnson was born in Humboldt, Iowa, on June 12, 1925. The son of William A. and Ollie (Hill) Johnson, Bill moved with his family to a farm near Callender in 1926 and graduated from Callender High School in 1943. He married Helen Heisman in Des Moines on July 18, 1948. Two children would later bless this family. Bill and his family lived southeast of Callender and farmed until his retirement in 1990. He and Helen moved to Callender at that time and eventually to Ames in 2003. Bill was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Callender, Trinity United Methodist Church of Fort Dodge and First United Methodist Church of Ames.

"Willie" loved his sports. He was an avid golfer and for over twenty-five years officiated and umpired basketball and baseball contests throughout the state. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Officials Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Athletic Coaches Association Officials Hall of Fame in 1990.

Bill passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 86 years of age.

Bill is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Helen, Ames; daughter Jan (Stephen) Martin, Ames; son Doyle (Leigh Holman) Johnson, Boulder, Colorado; granddaughter Cecily (Ryan) Johnston, Elk Point, South Dakota; grandson Gavin Martin, Denver, Colorado; great-grandchildren Cash, Shelby, Kinley and Paisley Johnston, Elk Point, South Dakota; and many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Ames, Iowa.
