From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Joan I. Burrell

BORN: December 10, 1939

DIED: May 23, 2012

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Joan I. Burrell, 72, of Ames, passed away May 23, 2012, at her home. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 1 at Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Avenue in Ames.

Joan was born December 10, 1939 in Osceola, Iowa to Leon and Edna Bachman, who preceded her in death. She had three devoted children with former husband Steve Burrell: Kelly Multach (Jeff) of San Antonio, TX; Amy Burrell-Tichy (Guy) of Schaumburg, IL; and Tim (Amy Lynn) of Frisco, TX. Joan was an adoring grandmother to Joseph, Nicholas, Madison, Adam, Lauren, Erin and Katherine and twin sister to Jean Bruner (Richard), of Ventura, Iowa and five nephews.

She graduated from Ames High School in 1958 and was a former member of the KC Chapter of PEO. She attended Iowa State University where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in home economics.

In 1976, Joan started her career in banking at First National Bank in Ames where she consistently embraced opportunities to further develop herself professionally including completing the Graduate School of Banking program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Joan was promoted numerous times in her nearly 30 years at First National and, in 1993, she became the first female vice president in the bank's history. Joan served on the Ames Affordable Housing Committee and the Ames Board of Realtors during her time at the bank. Even after her retirement in 2005, Joan's professionalism and experience made her an ideal candidate to participate on the City of Ames Board of Review from 2007 to 2011. Her professional accomplishments were typical of the way Joan lived her entire life – quietly taking on challenges, excelling at them and never boasting of her achievements – leading and inspiring by example.

After her retirement, Joan and her dog, Dooley, became snow birds spending winters in Mesa, Arizona.

Joan's family, many friends, and colleagues will fondly remember her as strong, independent, compassionate and generous. She truly knew something about everything, but shared her extensive knowledge in a humble, self-effacing way. Joan was an accomplished businesswoman, a sports fanatic, a gifted interior decorator and landscaper, a tremendous cook, an avid reader and Sudoku pro, a painter and a global traveler. She served as a disciplined and ethical role model for her three children, and instilled her values of hard work, creativity, integrity and resourcefulness in each.

In memory of her life and achievements, the family has established a scholarship at Iowa State University to assist single, working mothers in their efforts to improve themselves through education.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation designated for Homeward Hospice or the Iowa State University Foundation designated for the Joan Burrell Scholarship. Contributions for either organization may be sent to Joan Burrell Memorial, c/o Kelly Multach, 1910 Eagle Springs Drive, San Antonio, TX 78248.
