MRS. MARJORIE ANN RUPE CAREY
Mrs. Marjorie Ann Carey, Saranac Lake, N. Y., wife of Dean E. Carey, Enterprise publisher at Saranac Lake, was born April 21, 1922 at Des Moines, the daughter of William S. and Minta Warner Rupe, and died Saturday, June 25, at the Saranac Lake General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a graduate of Ames High School and attended Iowa State University.
After received a bachelor of science degree from the School of Speech of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1945, Mrs. Carey entered a career as a professional ballet dancer, and toured Europe witht the Charles Weidman Dance Company in 1965.
She was a member of the original Ballet Russe in 1946, and was a guest soloist with the Royal Norwegian Ballet Company in Oslo, Norway in 1955 and 1956.
Mrs. Carey worked with the Saranac Lake Summer Theater for five years, beginning in 1952, and also directed and appeared with the dancing group in one of the early Saranac Lake Rotary Shows.
She attended Columbia University and was awarded a master's degree from Teacher's College, with a major in speech pathology, in 1961.
In 1960 and 1961 Mrs. Carey conducted an experimental class with brain-damaged children at the New York City League for the hard of hearing. During the past five years she has done volunteer work with the speech-handicapped in several New York City hospitals, as well as with individuals in New York City and in Saranac Lake.
Mrs. Carey was also active in creative dramatics for children, and children's literature. In 1962 she sponsored the production of a film on the introduction to and training techniques of creative dramatics.
The film, used by educational organizations both in the United States and Europe, was produced at Northwestern University, and was dedicated to her father, William S. Rupe, former publisher of The Ames Daily Tribune.
A total of 25 copies of the film have been sold to universities, and 25 others are constantly on loan on a rental basis.
Mrs. Carey has published articles in conjunction with creative speech practice in speech and elementary education journals.
She is survived by her husband, Dean R. Carey, and a daughter, Wonder Minta.
Mrs. Carey was preceded in death by her mother, Minta, who died in 1952, and by her father, William S. Rupe, who died in 1959.
She was a partner in The Tribune from 1952-1958.
Memorial services were held at 2:30 Monday, June 27, from the Fortune Funeral Home, New York City, with Rev. Henry Gerard Couperus, pastor of the First Church of Religious Science, officiating. Burial was in Saranac Lake, N. Y.
