From Story County Watchman January 5, 1906

After a gradual decline for several weeks D. Stewart died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Elston Saturday morning at the age of eighty-five years. Deceased was born in Campbelltown, Scotland and when a mere boy came to this country and settled in Illinois. He was an old soldier and served in the Union army throughout the entire war. Soon after the war he came to this county and settled on a farm in southwest Grant township. About ten years ago he left the farm and came to Nevada where he purchased property and has since lived, for the past five years making his home with the Elston family. At the time of his death Mr. Stewart had accumulated considerable property and money but as to its disposition we are not advised further than that the property now occupied by Mr. Elston was transferred to him as a mark of love and affection for the many kind acts and careful attention given him during the residence with them. The only living relatives known is a cousin at Cedar Rapids and some distant relatives in Scotland. The funeral was held from the Friends church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock after which the remains were interred in the Nevada cemetery. Dr. Bunce conducted the services.
