Killed.

About ten a. m. Monday a fearful accident occurred in front of the court house in this city by which Joseph P. Emily met his death without knowing evidently what hurt him. He was engaged in driving a team of the Wingert, Riddlesbarger & Co., and had a load of eggs thereon. Just before reaching the entrance to the packinghouse a dog attached to a small wagon came bounding along at which the team was scared and turned to upon the lawn in front of the court house yard outside the walk proper and in the effort to stop the team he was thrown from his seat in some way falling in such a way that he was hurt by the team and the wagon running over his person breaking ribs and otherwise doing injury to him. Scores were there in a hurry but too late to prevent a serious ending to the work. He was hurriedly picked up and physicians at hand but upon examination with the result that nothing could be done availed in the least. After working with him for some time he was carried across the street into the packery where he breathed his last. Internal injuries in addition to the breaking of ribs was announced as the reason for the death, shoulder dislocated, etc. Mr. Emily was born in May, 1860, making 45 years of age. He had been married twice the first time to Annie Meadows*, who died several years since, then to Miss Maud Hines about four years ago, and whom he leaves to mourn his loss. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Elzy*, sisters and brothers to mourn this taking off. The funeral was held Wednesday at the Methodist church under the supervision of Dr. Bunce of the Friends society, and interment made in the Nevada cemetery. Mr. Emily had been a resident of Nevada, many years and stood high in the esteem of our people the majority of whom knew him through personal association and all are free to express themselves as to his integrity and uprightness.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Annie Meadows" was C. Anna Johnson, daughter of Anderson Johnson and Eliza (Deloe) Johnson. Eliza Deloe married three times: firstly to Anderson Johnson, secondly to John Smith and thirdly to Joseph Meddaugh. At the time of Anna's marriage, Eliza was married to Joseph Meddaugh and Anna was known by her step-father's name at that time.

The article refers to Joseph Emily's mother as Mrs. Elzy. She was Mahala Ann Crisp who also married three times: firstly to Jesse Marsh, secondly to Isaac Emily (Joseph's father), and thirdly John Calvin Elzy.
