The fifth of this month G. H. Hays and wife were called upon to suffer a loss that they will receive the sympathy of all it being the death by fire of a brother-law, Frank Maupin and son Paul in a carpenter shop in Atlanta, Ill. Mr. Maupin was called out for a bolt and upon his return found the shop on fire, which he made an effort to subdue, but was unable so to do, thus losing his own life as well. It was a sad hour for all concerned. Mrs. Maupin is a sister of Mrs. G. H. Hays, B. F. and H. H. Bell of this place. The sympathy of all are extended to them in this their hour of trouble and trial.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Hays" were Gideon and Laura (Bell) Hayes. The deceased, Frank Maupin, was married to Nora Bell, sister of Laura Bell. "B. F. Bell" was Benjamin F. Bell and "H. H. Bell" was Harvey Harris Bell. Nora, Benjamin, Laura and Harvey Bell are the children of Thomas Bell and Jane (Richmond) Bell. In the 1880 census, the family is listed in Newcomb, Champaign County, Illinois.
