From Story County Watchman July 29, 1904

On Saturday last about 11 a. m. James Alverson was injured by the protrusion of the handle of a pitchfork running up into his bowels near eight inches lacerating them badly. It appears that he had thrown the fork down from the hay mow and then jumped down after striking him thus. He was alone and called for help but succeeded in extricating himself before help arrived. Physicians were called at once but the injury was so severe that he died Monday. He was working upon the farm of Mr. Greeley Handsaker who did everything that was possible for him but without avail. His parents lived at Batavia, Ill., and they were notified of the accident and arrived here Sunday. The remains were taken to their home for interment.
