From Story County Watchman May 13, 1904

Word came from Mrs. E. A. Allen who went to Wapello county last week that her father died Monday night. J. H. McDowell was about 83 years old and leaves a wife and eight children. He entered government land 46 years ago which he still owned and where he resided at the time of his death.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. E. A. Allen" was Elzira Desty McDowell, wife of Esau Anderson Allen whom she married 23 December 1875 in Wapello County, Iowa. Elzira was the daughter of John H. McDowell and Mary Ann (Fisher) Allen.
