From Story County Watchman September 4, 1903

Ames, Aug. 31.--An unknown man, 5 feet 10 inches high, sandy complected, wearing mustache, about 28-30 years old, was run down and instantly killed one mile north of Kelly Friday night about 11 o'clock. The victim wore blue overalls over dark blue pants, dark serge coat and vest, black wool hat and blue shirt. He was riding on a railroad tricycle, evidently taken from Polk City junction, coming north towards Ames. When about one mile north of Kelly he was overtaken by a freight train and instantly killed, his neck and collar-bone being broken, besides a number of severe wounds and bruises on head and body.
