From Story County Watchman August 23, 1901

W. L. Bates of Harlan, Iowa, Tuesday was in the city on the sad errand of conveying the body of his mother to be interred in the Nevada cemetery which was done that day. Mrs. James Bates was a native of Illinois coming to Iowa in 1855. She died at Harlan from congestion of the brain March 22, 1901, after a brief illness. The body was disinterred and brought to this city on the 20th as noted.
