From Story County Watchman March 20, 1896

Roland Record: ....Little Howard Bates only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Bates, aged 2 1/2 years died Wednesday morning of membranus croup. Funeral services were held yesterday, and the little one was laid beneath the sod, never more to be looked upon by his loving father, mother and little sisters.
