From Story County Watchman May 4, 1894

On Monday while passing between two cars at Ames Jo. Applegate was caught between the bumpers and squeezed so badly that he died Tuesday evening. Mr. Applegate was one of the older residents of this county and for years lived south of Nevada but some time since moved into the western part of this county. The funeral will take place to-day. His age was about 60 years.

DIED.--At his home near Ames May first, 1894, Joseph Wilford Applegate aged 53 years 2 months and 9 days. He was the eldest son of Lewis and Louisa Applegate. Had been married twice. Two children were the fruit of the first marriage, and one the last. His only daughter died Sep. 1880. He leaves a wife, two sons, an aged mother, four sisters and three brothers to mourn his loss. The funeral took place from his mother's residence on Friday, at 2 p. m., and was largely attended by his many relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. Fegtley, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Nevada Cemetery. He will be greatly missed by all who were acquainted with him. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a dutiful son, and an affectionate brother.
