OBITUARY

MRS. JOHN LAWMAN

Mrs. Violet Elliott Lawman, widow of the last John Lawman, died Sunday fornoon at the home near Rodman, Palo Alto county, of her only son Thomas Lawman. With her at the time of her death were all her children and they are all present for the funeral, which is conducted this afternoon from the Lutheran church in this city by the pastor, Rev. F. R. Shirck.

Violet Elliott was a native of England, where whe was born February 28, 1833. She came to this country in 1855 and two years later she was married at Sennett, New York, to John Lawman, who died in Nevada January 29, 1906. She died as stated, April 2, 1916, aged 83 years, 1 month and 5 days. Upon their marriage in 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Lawman emigrated to Illinois, and in 1875 they moved again, coming to Iowa and locating in Richland township of Story county, where the remained until 1896, when they bought and occupied their home in the southeast part of this city. Since Mr. Lawman's death ten years ago, Mrs. Lawman had had her home with her several children, coming and going as she pleased and happening to be with her son when her health finally failed.

Mrs. Lawman is survived by five of her eight children, to wit: Mary (Mrs. J. E. Brooks of Nevada), Martha (Mrs. Nathan Kelly of Granada, Minn.), Margaret (Mrs. J. T. Handsaker north of Colo), Thomas of Rodman, and Linda (Mrs. F. A. Boynton of Bagor, Mich.) Two daughters, Violet and Belle, and an infant son Robert, preceded her. She also leaves 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was a typical mother in a pioneer country, and she met well and capably her responsibilities in life. Her death was in the fullness of years, and she lived in the enjoyment of excellent health until near the end.
