Linsey Sowers, Who Died Last Saturday, Was Among First Settlers

The last summons came to Linsey Sowers just before noon last Saturday. He had been in failing health for some time, but was seriously ill only about a week, a severe cold having developed into pneumonia. In his death another one of the first settlers of this part of Iowa has departed for a better land.

The funeral services were held at the home north of town Tuesday, Rev. Alber officiating. A very large gathering of old time friends was present to pay their last respects to the man they had learned to honor in life. The remains were buried in the Old Bracken cemetery, southeast of town. More than forty carriages were in the procession which followed the hearse to the burial grounds.

Lindsey Sowers was born in Fountain County, Ind., Dec. 25th, 1833 and departed this life March 4th, 1911, aged 77 years, 2 months and 7 days. He emigrated to Hamilton county, Iowa, in the fall of 1856, and settled on the homestead, where he still resided until death summoned him to the great beyond. He endured many of the hardships which the early settlers had to face. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Ward, March 20th, 1862. This faithful life companion was called to the better land, Feb. 12th, 1898. To them were born eight children, two of whom died in infancy. He leaves six children and seventeen grandchildren. The children are Mary Hughes, Albert, Pearly, Guy, Pliny and Charlie. He was ever a patient, kind father and one who considered no self-sacrifice too great for the best interests of his children. He was always cheerful, even in declining health. His ever cheerful presence will be greatly missed by children and grandchildren.
