From Story County Watchman April 10, 1885

A son of James Bates, in the south part of Washington township died on Tuesday from excessive loss of blood caused by a bleeding. He was about 16 years of age, and has been subject to excessive bleeding upon slight hurts, and the result has been as above. Mr. Bates lost his wife some months since, and now is called upon to mourn for a son.
