Marcella C. Egenes was born on Jan. 29, 1924, to Clara Malmin and Peter Egenes on a farm near McCallsburg. She died on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at Good Samaritan Village in Hot Springs Village, Ark.

After receiving her teaching certificate at Waldorf College, she taught in several schools. She graduated from Luther College and began teaching in the Minneapolis, Minn., school system. She entered the Women’s Army Corps during the Korean conflict. She advanced from a private to second lieutenant in 10 months and was honorably discharged after four years.

Eventually, she attended the University of California, Berkley, and earned a master’s degree in public health. She concluded her career as state attendance officer for the state of Indiana. She was recognized as a “national leader” at the Midwest Conference of Social Workers in 1977.

She was active in the Reserve Officers Association and retired in 1984 as a Lt. Colonel. Marcella was faithful to her Lutheran roots wherever she was. She enjoyed attending symphonies and operas. She traveled to Norway numerous times as well as all of the 50 states and other parts of the world. She was the first family member who met all of her 62 first cousins, and she treasured those ties.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harold; and one sister, Eleanor Imsland.

She is survived by two brothers Paul, of Newton, and Orvis, of Calif.; one sister, Helen Sarsfield of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; and 14 nieces and nephews from Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and California.
