Marjorie was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, and considered family her greatest gift. All who knew her knew family came before all other things. Her home was open to all. When anyone entered her home, they were quickly made a part of her family. Everyone was always warmly greeted and generously fed. Someone once asked her what her hobbies were and she replied, “Being with family.” This included Sunday dinners at her parents’ house, attending the weddings of her children and grandchildren, celebrating the births of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling to spend time with her children. She will truly be missed by her family and friends.

She was born May 9, 1927, in Boone. She attended a one-room school house and then Gilbert High School, where she graduated in 1944. She went to work as a secretary at the Iowa State University Library in Ames after graduation. The following year on July 12, 1945, she married Robert Richard Garland in rural Boone at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Later, she also worked as a secretary to a doctor and a lawyer. During the 1950s, she and Robert opened and operated the “Lucky G” restaurant at the corner of Lincoln Way and Grand Avenue in Ames. After the sale of the Lucky G, she worked at the ISU Dairy Building as a secretary and later on for 21 years for the Ames School District as secretary to the Ames superintendent and at Sawyer Elementary.

She is survived by her five children, Linda (Steve) Michalicek, of Spring, Texas, Chuck (Kelli Faidley) Garland, of Ames, Leanne (Rich) Beachler, of Boone, Robert (Luann) Garland, of Hutchinson, Kan., and Sean Garland, of Houston; one sister, Mary (Don) Schram, of Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Garland, of Boone; eight grandchildren, Jane Funke, of Madison, Wis., Kathryn Garland, of Kenosha, Wis., Shannon Nyhan, of Burnt Hills, N.Y., Robert Garland, of Hutchinson, Kan., Sherry Garland, of Maquoketa, Aleda Beachler, of Ankeny, Megan Wilson, of Tomball, Texas, and Ian Beachler, of Boone; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
