THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, October 23, 2010.

Michael Stephen Miller, 48, of Maxwell, died at his home Friday, Oct. 22, surrounded by his loving family. He was diagnosed as having a rare form of kidney cancer a year ago.

Mike was born Feb. 24, 1962, in Lansing, Mich., to Martin and Marsha (Stephenson) Miller. He graduated from Ames High School in 1981, Lincoln Technical Institute in 1983 and the Police Academy in 1992.

He was united in marriage to Roxanne Caple on Oct. 30, 2001. Mike was a deputy sheriff of Story County for 20 years who loved his work. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, his home in the country, looking for artifacts in the creek, his dogs, and his family and friends.

Mike was respected and beloved by all who knew him. He was a member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church; the Iowa Sheriffs Association; Iowa Crime Prevention Association, where he served as president; and the Ames Moose.

Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne, of Maxwell; three sons: Stephen (Sarah) Miller, of Ames, Justin Gerlach, of Nevada, Brent Gerlach, of Maxwell; two daughters: Amanda Miller, of Ames, Alison (Trenton) Harrison, of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren: Reagen Miller, Jackson Miller, Madison Gerlach, Jordan Gerlach; his mother and father: Martin and Marcia Miller, of Ames; and three sisters: Lisa Miller Zenger, of Ames, Sharon (Bobby) Smith, of Bradley Beach, N.J.; and Amy (Paul) Gauthier, of Fishers, Ind.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Maxwell United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Peoria Cemetery near Maxwell.

Visitation will be at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada beginning at 2 p.m. Monday. The family will be present to greet guests from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25. A prayer service will follow visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Mike Miller Scholarship Fund.

The Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
