Gary Kreykes, 74, of Ames, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at Green Hills Health Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home.

Gary D. Kreykes, 74, of Ames, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at Greenhills Health Center in Ames. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Gary was born Feb. 16, 1936, in Hospers to Dick and Winifred (Mouw) Kreykes. Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He married Myrna Schalekamp on July 1, 1960, in Orange City.
Gary graduated from Sioux Center High School, Northwestern Junior College, Westmar College and Colorado State College, finishing with a master’s degree in physical education. Gary’s basketball coaching career took him to South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana and back to Iowa. He coached at Muscatine Community College, Iowa Lakes Community College, and ended his career at Westmar College in Le Mars, retiring to Okoboji in 2001.
Gary was always an active man. He was physically active, spending years jogging, running 10K races, and encouraging others to be active. Golfing, boating and officiating high school football games also brought him much joy. He was civically active, serving on two different school boards, the Muscatine YMCA Board, the Le Mars Parks Board, the Okoboji United Methodist Church Camp Board and his homeowners association. He was also active in his church, serving in various leadership positions.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna Kreykes, of Ames; two daughters, Jennifer (Julius) Weyman, of Birmingham, Ala., and Audra (Brian) Duster, of Ames; grandchildren, Ben, Emily, Yetta and Charles, of Ames, and Dirk and Rebekah, of Birmingham, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Dirk Jay Kreykes; and three sisters, Madge Vander Woude, Frances Van Beek and Vera Te Paske.
