Martha F. Nebgen, 74, of Ames, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames.

Martha F. Nebgen, 74, of Ames, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames.

Martha was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Owensboro, Ky., the daughter of Orion Earl and Margaret (Fuchs) Felix. She graduated from Owensboro High School in 1953. She attended Indiana University, Stephens College and Washington University, majoring in art and music. She married John Nebgen on June 15, 1957, in Owensboro, Ky.; the couple divorced in 1981. After being a homemaker and community volunteer, she returned to college and earned a bachelor’s of nursing degree from Regis University in Colorado in 1985. She lived in the Kansas City area before moving to Ames in 2004, where she was involved with Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames, Heartland Senior Services Band, Iowa Watercolor Society and International Horn Society. She enjoyed playing her horn with family and friends, painting, doing water therapy with her “pool buddies,” and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela (Charles) Schwab, of Ames, and Anya (Dean) Shoemaker, of Gilbert, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Lauren Schwab and Bradley Shoemaker; and one sister, Jean Earle Felix, of Owensboro, Ky.

Memorials may be directed to Central Iowa Symphony, American Cancer Society or Israel Family Hospice House.
