From Nevada Representative April 10, 1901

Mrs. Hilda Hoel Newlon died March 16, 1901, at her home in Laporte, Colorado, at the age of forty-four. Mrs. Newlon was the only sister of Mrs. C. W. Wells of this city, and daughter of the aged Mrs. Hoel whose home is with Mrs. Wells. Mrs. Newlon was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hoel, was born in Wisconsin, and was a member of the Hoel household on Locust street in this city from 1867 to 1878, when she went to Colorado. One year later she married to Mr. Henry Newlon, a Virginian, second cousin on his father's side to President James Madison and on his mother's side to President Zachary Taylor. The Newlon home was a properous one on a fruit ranche five miles from the city of Fort Collins and was brightened by an adopted daughter, Blanche Newlon. The blight which brought to this home was severe indeed, for it took both parents within a week. Typhoid fever epidemic in Fort Collins, prostrated Miss Newlon, who was a student in the State College in that city , and Mrs. Newlon, in care of her daughter, soon fell victim to the disease. When, after many weeks, she could be taken to her home, the terrible malady seized Mr. Newlon and soon ended his life. The shock to Mrs. Newlon produced a relapse and her separation from her husband was for only seven days. Hilda Hoel was a bright, energetic young woman whom the older residents of Nevada remember with the kindliest interest, and whose death they sincerely regret. Miss Blanche Newlon is visiting her aunt, Mrs. C. W. Wells, this week. She will return to Fort Collins Saturday to resume her studies at the College from which she expects to graduate next June.
