THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, October 15, 2010.

Charles S. “Bill” Carmean, 94, of Bethany Manor in Story City, formerly of Ames, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at Bethany Manor. The family will receive friends one hour before the 11 a.m. memorial service Monday, Oct. 18, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Charles S. “Bill” Carmean was born May 16, 1916, in Leon, the son of Barden and Hazel (Coffin) Carmean. He graduated from Leon High School and attended the University of Iowa, later receiving his civil engineering PE. He married Elva Erickson May 4, 1941, in Fremont, Neb. He was a World War II Army veteran reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation as an engineer, living in Harlan, Sidney, Creston and Storm Lake, before moving to Ames. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 37. He enjoyed golfing and dancing.

Bill is survived by his wife, Elva, of Story City; daughters, Jennifer (Bob) Thomsen, of Centennial, Colo., and Carol (Curt) Houge, of Ames; daughter-in-law, Arla Carmean, of Ames; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sara Poole, of Cedar Rapids.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence Lesan and Bernice Gartin; son, Charles S. Carmean II; and a grandson in 2006.

Memorials may be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, Homeward Hospice or a charity of your choice.
