THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

Jeffrey Franklin Ahrens died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Rush University Hospital in Chicago. He was an organ donor.

His many friends and relatives will gather for a celebration of his life from 2 p.m. until sunset Saturday, Oct. 16, at Phillips House, 721 N. Linn St., in Iowa City.

Jeff was born July 25, 1961, at Chateauroux Air Base, France, to Kay and Franklin Ahrens. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1980 and then attended the University of Iowa where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and religion and master of library science degree. He married Jennie VerSteeg Oct. 5, 1996. They made their home in Crystal Lake, Ill. He worked as head of Technical Services at Round Lake Public Library in Round Lake, Ill.

He loved people, books, music, philosophy, politics and languages. His humor and intellect brightened the world around him. One of his favorite movies was “Bladerunner,” from which the following quotation is taken as it applies to Jeff: “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long and you have burned so very, very brightly.”

He is survived by his wife, Jennie VerSteeg, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; his parents, Franklin and Kay Ahrens, of Ames; two brothers, Greg (Vanessa) Ahrens, of Omaha, Neb., and Matthew (Liz) Ahrens, of Chicago, Ill.; and one sister, Kristin (Brad) Vest, of San Jose, Calif.

Donations in Jeff’s name may be given to the Companion Animal Fund at Iowa State University or Round Lake Public Library at Round Lake, Ill.
