OBITUARY

S. S. WEBB DIES IN TEXAS

An Early Settler of Nevada Pleasantly Remembered

S. S. Webb died at the residence of his son Charles near Victoria, Texas, ans his burial took place Sunday, April 9th, at Victoria. His age was eighty six and a half years. His wife passed on about eight years ago, and he leaves besides his son Charles, his daughter, Mrs. Theodore Delar of Victoria.

Mr. Webb came to Nevada to live about the year '54 or '55 when the town comprised 18 cabins, when old Esquire H----on carried the mail to Des Moines once a week returning with it the following day if Skunk river bottom permitted passage, and T. E. Alderman the post master had his office, store and residence in a log cabin whose site is marked by the stone in the court house yard. He was elected clerk of the courts of Story County in 1858, on the last Democratic ticket that was elected in this county, and he remained here until some time after the war. He then removed to Boone county, where he was active also in politics, and was elected sheriff also on the Democratic ticket in the '70s. Perhaps twenty years ago he and his family removed to Texas, where he thereafter lived in good peace near Victoria and died ripe in years ath the home of his son as stated. Mrs. Webb was one of the daughters of Uncle David Child of Nevada, and both Mr. and Mrs. Webb are most kindly remembered by their contemporaries.
