Sharilyn “Shari” Kay Spires, of Black Mountain died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at her home.

Services were held Sunday, September 12 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Black Mountain. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to CarePartners of Asheville, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

Shari was born August 11, in Joliet, IL. She was the daughter of Marion and Robert Spires. She spent her early years in the town of Nevada, IA, with her parents, brothers, and sisters. She enjoyed spending much of her time with her beloved grandparents, Wilferd and Elsie Montgomery. Shari graduated from Nevada High School and had just been home in June to celebrate her 50th class reunion.

On June 5, 1993 Shari married her dearly loved husband, Walter Hoffman, and relocated from North Palm Beach, FL to Black Mountain, NC. She was a feature writer for the Palm Beach Post and an ardent supporter of civil rights. She loved playing piano, was a talented quilter, poet, writer, excellent storyteller, and master of repartee. She loved to drive her RV and her scooter, “Ruby.” She helped found the Swannanoa Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Black Mountain, NC.

She is survived by her husband, Walter, his three sons, Kurt, Karl, and Kris; her son, Adam Weinberger; her granddaughter, Tashena Falcon; and her sisters, Sandra Erickson of Williamsburg, IA, Deborah Fischer of NY, Deborah Hermann of Kansas City, MO, and Kimery Zoellick of Ackley, IA. She is also survived by her three beloved dogs, Mitch, Brie, and Goldie.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Vicky Weinberger; her stepson, David Bergbom; her mother, Marion VanTiger; her stepfather, Kenneth Arlo Chitty; her brother, Kenneth Allen Chitty; her granddaughter, Olivia Hoffman; and her father, Robert Spires.
