THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, August 18, 2010.

Jacob Petrich, 91, of Ames and formerly of Chicago, passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Green Hills Health Center. Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, Kan., with funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac, Kan.

Jack was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Forest City, Pa., to Jakob Petriè and Amelia Petriè (née Otrin). He was the second of seven children and was raised in Lipsenj, Slovenia, of the former Yugoslavia.

He returned to the United States to live in Chicago on Dec. 24, 1937. He was inducted into active service in the U.S. Army on Nov. 19, 1941, and served in the 39th Infantry as an automatic rifleman in North Africa and Italy. After being wounded in action in Salerno, Italy, on Oct. 13, 1943, he received the Purple Heart Medal. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on July 1, 1945, he returned to Chicago, where he married Anna O’Korn on April 23, 1949.

Jack worked at International Harvester for more than 10 years, and he worked for the Department of Sanitation of the city of Chicago for more than 20 years, retiring in 1985. Jack and Anna relocated to Ames in August 2004.

He enjoyed singing, polka music, being outdoors, long walks and learning other languages. All his life, he was an outstanding model of dedication, sacrifice, loyalty and hard work. He was an exemplary husband and father.

He is immediately survived by his wife, Anna; one son, Jacob, and one daughter-in-law, Nathalie; two grandchildren, Roman and Camille; two brothers, Frank and Anton; and several nephews and nieces living in the Chicago area and Slovenia.
