THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 5, 2010.

Mervin Olan Dobbs, 88, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, in Zearing. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing, followed by a family service.

Mervin was born Jan. 27, 1922, to Leona (Bailey) and Aca Dobbs at their home in Akan Township, Wis. He attended school in rural Richland County, Wis. On Sept. 24, 1944, he married Norma Chesebro at the parsonage in Valley, Wis. He worked for more than 40 years as a cheesemaker in both Wisconsin and Iowa, earning many awards for cheesemaking. He also worked for 13 years in maintenance at Colonial Manor in Zearing, and retired from there in 1995. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying trout fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed conversation, storytelling, and watching football, favoring the Boone Valley, NESCO, and Ames High School teams and the Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Dobbs, of Zearing; two sons, Michael Dobbs (Kathy), of Ames, and Dean Dobbs, of Nevada; one daughter, Deanne Stansbery (Wayne), of Zearing; one son-in-law, Arnold Bjorklund, of Goldfield; three daughters-in-law, Edna Dobbs, of Ames, Diane Dobbs, of Eagle Grove, and Annabel Dobbs, of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Norma Buchli (Marvin), of Rice Lake, Wis.; and one brother, Arlie Dobbs (Bonnie), of Richland Center, Wis. He had 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Merrill and Verlin; two sisters, Eileen and Rozella; four children, Charles, Richard, Terry and Patricia; and one grandson, James.
